He had joined the ship broker company Samuel Brown & Co. when he was 17 following in the footsteps of Thomas Harrison, whom I presume was his brother. He worked his way up the company and became a full partner 11 years later.

When George Brown died in 1853, the Harrisons took over the company and renamed it as Thos. & Jas. Harrison.

The company originally specialised in importing brandy and wine from Europe. As time went on it expanded and started trading between India, the Far East, and all of the Americas.

The company had premises at Chapel Street, near to the church, but then in 1882 the firm moved to Mersey Chambers, a new building otherwise known as 4/8 Old Churchyard. As the address implies it overlooked the churchyard and cemetery. This impressive building has a carving of a sailing ship high up on the building.

The church yard had originally been used as a burial ground in 1361 after a plague had affected Liverpool. It stopped taking burials in 1849, 11 years before James died.

After he died in 1891 the church yard was turned into a memorial garden, with the gravestones laid flat and used to form path ways around the garden. It was dedicated to the memory of James Harrison. The churchyard gardens are still very popular with workers from nearby offices.

The gardens are owned by the City of Liverpool, and are a designated Protected Green Space. They were awarded European Union Green Flag status in 2002. Ironically in this year the company went into liquidation and the offices closed.
