The statue is located on the rocks overlooking the Sunny Sands beach at the eastern end of The Stade. The statue was created by Cornelia Parker for the Folkestone Triennial and arts festival. The lifesize statue has taken the pose of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. The artist letter box dropped leaflets to 20,000 homes in Folkestone to ask for a volunteer to sit for the piece. A shortlist of 50 people was drawn up and local lady Georgina Baker, aged 38, was selected to pose for the statue.
The statue does not have a tail like most mermaids do but this has been explained that they lose their tails when they come out of water so that they can move on land. When they return to the water their tail grows.
The photos show the mermaid from behind. Not for reasons of modesty but the tide was in so taking photos from the beach was not an option! A superb opportunity for "visits".
