Tacking Point lighthouse was constructed in 1879 to prevent ships running aground while traversing up and down the NSW coast. Between 1823 and the construction of the lighthouse there were 20 shipwrecks in the region.
In 1919, the light was converted from an oil lamp to an automatic acetylene lamp negating the need for a lighthouse keeper. In 1974, a mains electricity was connected to the mains electricity.
The relatively small eight-metre high lighthouse is made of cement-rendered brick and originally had an adjoining lighthouse keeper's house. Despite it being demolished, the footprint is still visible. Both buildings were constructed at a total cost of £4650.
The lighthouse is classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and jointly managed by New South Wales Department of Lands, NSW Maritime and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
