Framing the Katherine Hepburn Garden in the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza are a series of six fountains, five of which are virtually identical and one is sufficiently different to be considered separately. The fountains were designed to mitigate traffic noise and create an atmosphere of peace.
At the center of each fountains is a vase-like bowl sitting on a pedestal. The unique fountain is elevated. Water flows into the bowl and cascades over the rim into a square pond. The water then cascades over the front of the square pond down steps and a two foot water wall into a second square pond. On the west side of the first level is a bronze sculpture of a snapping turtle, a tribute to the fact that this area is known as Turtle Bay. Within the wall is an open black metal structure with four columns supporting a latticed frame-worked roof topped with a finial.
