The south side of the block between First and Second Avenues on East 47th Street is known as Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. The compass rose is located in the northeast corner of the plaza by First Avenue. Interestingly, the compass rose reveals that the Manhattan street grid is not oriented north-south and east-west as is commonly portrayed in maps. North is actually about 30 degrees west of the direction of the avenues. The compass rose is inscribed:
