The public can now view the Chagall Window. It was moved from the Secretariat Building into the lobby of the General Assembly Building. This 15' wide by 12' high stained glass window was created by Marc Chagall in memory of Dag Hammarskjold, the Secretary General of the United nations who died on September 18, 1961 in an airplane crash in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) while on a peacekeeping mission to the Congo.

This window was unveiled by Secretary General U Thant on 11 September 1964. Marc Chagall wrote the following dedication:

"A tous ceux qui ont servi les buts et principes de la Charte des Nations Unies et pour lesquels Dag Hammarskjöld a donné sa vie"

("To all who served the Purposes and Principles of the United Nations Charter, for which Dag Hammarskjöld gave his life".)

The United Nations Building is jointly owned by the governments of the 193 member countries. It is legally international territory with their own police force and postal system. You must pass through a security check to enter the public lobby.
