Don Pedro de Peralta was charged by the Viceroy of Spain, in 1609, to establish the Villa Real de Sante Fe de San Francisco de Assisi. In modern Santa Fe, there is a park named after Don Pedro de Peralta, and it features the statue "The Founding of Santa Fe", which features de Peralta on a horse. The sculptor is Dave McGary.
Peralta replaced the prior governer (Juan de Ornate, the first governor & founder) and moved the capital of New Mexico from La Villa de San Gabriel, to Santa Fe.
Peralta used a surveyor to plot out the plan for the new capital city, with multiple districts around a public square that included the government buildings. He plotted the city boundaries, assigned garden and home plots for citizens, a jail, storage areas, chapel, etc. He remained in office until 1613.
