The Smokehouse just opened a few months ago and would appear to be doing quite well. The building is new and the takeaway and sit down restaurant occupy the ground floor. The takeaway part is small, probably to maximise the sit-down area, and this could cause loss of trade if it is necessary to queu outside in inclement weather.
The Smokehouse appears to serve only Fish & Chips, no sausages or pies, so that has to be a good thing. Being a northerner it is good to see that the fish is fried in dripping not the tasteless oil that many southern shops use. Several differing types of fish are available.
One quirky thing is that if you buy fish you have to have chips with it as they are included in the price! A portion of chips can be bought by itself, however.
If eating the fish and chips on the premises they are served in the same cardboard box that takeaway customers get. Not a problem unless you like a plate!
As to quality, the fish was done to perfection. The batter was golden and nice and crispy and the fish a nice white colour. The few chips I tasted were good.
The shop has a web site but it needs updating now that it is open, see: (
