Mr. Clyde A. Lewis
Patriot, Community Leader, and founder of the
Air Base Liaison Committee
As a Major in the Army Air Corps, Mr. Lewis flew two tours in the 401st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, during World War II. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster, Croix De Guerre (France) with palm, and the European Campaign Medal with six battle stars.
His distinguished contributions to our nation continued when he was selected as the Commander-In-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States in 1949. Through hard work and strong leadership, Mr. Lewis was instrumental in the establishment of Plattsburgh Air Force Base in 1952. His support of the local community and dedication to the Air Force have been a model to his family, friends, and the nation he proudly served.
