North of Cartmel as you drive up the valley, the road splits at a lovely old milestone and each split crosses the upper reaches of the valley's main drain, the river Eea. Eea Higher Bridge is the eastern road.

The milestone has a reverse S in the place name HAWKSHEAD, making it unique. The next S is correct. The road junction separates travellers going either towards Kendal or Hawkshead. Two important market towns in previous times.
