The Charles Manning Reed Mansion is probably the best known landmark in Erie, for its size, architecture, and association with the city's most prominent family during the nineteenth century.

The Reed Mansion is a breath-taking building that sits in the heart of downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. It is actually a complex of two buildings, a former residence and a former office. As stated in the Living Places website, “is in the best traditions of the Greek Revival style, incorporating a bold silhouette, broad proportions, and simplified details. It is constructed of brick, with stone foundations, and wooden trim and embellishments”.

The mansion was the vision of Charles Manning Reed a successful businessman, a retired general, a former politician, and prominent citizen of Erie in the 1800’s. Well aware of his status in the area, he spared no expense in the design and construction of the building. He hired some of the area’s most talented craftsman to design and construct a building that would dominate the landscape and be worthy of his position within the community. The structure took over two and half years to complete and sits a full ten feet above street level. The building has seen several restorations and renovations over the years.

Reed died in 1871 and his widow continued to occupy the house until her death in 1901. The building was later sold to The Erie Club in 1904 and the private social organization still occupies the building today.
