It was the first of the "high-rise" Lodges and offered hotel-like services, which set it apart from the traditional highway Motor Lodges--it was the beginning of the segementation now so prevelant in the hospitality industry.
Even as the New York location was hotel-like, it played on traditional HoJo qualities as best it could. The 1960s brochure reminded people that Howard Johnson's was "A familiar landmark along the highway, Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge has now acquired the same ready identification in the heart of New York...With the convenience and the economy travelers expect on the road..."
The building is now the Hampton Inn Hotel, a parking lot on the lower floors and a telecommunications shop.
