In March of 1862 the Civil War Battle of Glorieta was fought at this location. Often referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West", this little known yet decisive battle was one of the few fought in the West. Much of the battlefield is now located within the boundaries of Pecos National Historic Park.
The Glorieta Pass Battlefield is the location of the western-most Civil War Battlefield in the United States. There are 2 monuments here: One is to the Sibley Brigade, erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the other is to the Colorado Volunteers, erected by the People of Colorado.

Colorado Volunteers
at the Battles of Glorietta Pass
March 26-28 1862
On this site and several miles to the west along the Santa Fe Trail Colorado Volunteers and Regular US Troops fought a Confederate force from Texas in the Battles of Glorieta Pass. Although no clear victor emerged after two days of fierce and bloody combat, a successful flank attack by the Coloradans against the enemys supply wagons hidden in Apache Canyon destroyed the Confederate ability to continue the campaign. The Texasns retreated, thus ending their threat to New Mexiso and to the Union-controlled Colorado goldfields.
Erected by
the People of Colorado
in Memory of
the brave men who fought here.
(erected in 1995)
NOTE: This monument was not "cut" very well and is difficult to read.
