Today, the Plume of Feathers is readily recognised as being the symbol of the Prince of Wales. "Ich Dien" however,is German for "I serve" - pleasingly similar to the Welsh "Eich Dyn" or "Your Man".

The symbol is thought to have come to Britain with Edward, the Black Prince, the eldest son of Edward III of England. It is said, the Black Prince took the arms from the blind John I of Bohemia, against whom he fought in the Battle of Crécy in 1346. At this time the symbol was a pair of black wings but has been modified since.

It is also appears on the badge of many regiments of the British army and some British coinage.

This one is certainly bright - the feathers are usually painted white.

The pub staff know that the sign was painted by a local artist but could not remember their name.
