The artist Berry Breene is a graduate of Allegheny College (Meadville, PA). She has helped design and carried out several murals and a rather well known mural/sculpture in Meadville WM4MY0 (
visit link) and WMZTJ WMZTJ.
Now with her eye turned toward Titusville she created a mural in 4 parts that is located at the intersection of Central Avenue and Franklin Streets on the side of the Blue Canoe restaurant and brewery.
In the first panel you will see the Titusville area as it was before civilization moved into the area. Lumber was the areas major industry and oil was already being used by the local Indians for medicine and other uses.
In the second panel you will find Colonel Drake himself longing in front of the hotel that was his name sake for many years till it was removed to make room for advancements to the local communities health care along with an oil refinery and several barrels of oil and a oil derrick.
The third panel shows us Idea Tarbell sitting on the logo for the Standard Oil Company about which she wrote several books. Also in this panel you will see John Mathers portable photo studio (The wagon) that is part of the Drake Well Museum's collection, the long gone Queen City flat iron building and the front of the local train from the OC&T railroad.
The fourth panel shows some of the more modern aspects of the area. The canoeing shows just part of the outdoor activities that are now a big part of the local communities that also includes hiking and biking. You will also see McKinney Hall (the red building)that is now used by the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville as an administration building and for several classrooms. The white building is the local City Hall and the building further back is the former Penn Theater that was taken down to make room for a parking lot and driveway (the cost of modernization can be way to high at times).
With the help of street lights the mural can be seen day or night.
