Councilman Howard Coates said the memorial would bring the community together.
“It will be a memorial to those who fell on 9/11 and those who have fallen since,” he said. “It will also be a symbol, and a symbol of unity. Unlike any other event in this country… we saw a unifying of this country in an unprecedented way.”
The eternal flame, Coates said, would serve as a lasting reminder of the lives lost, and how the country came together after the attacks.
