In 1889, in order to eliminate much of the traffic congestion on Main Street which was being produced by an on-grade crossing, construction of a retaining wall for an elevated railroad crossing was constructed. Based on designs proposed in 1883 by H. H. Richardson, two stations on either side of the elevated tracks were built. In 1925, they were replaced by the present Union Terminal and a new entrance was build on Lyman Street (now Frank B. Murray Street). This entrance is decorated with the stone trim from the old H.H. Richardson station.

Today, Union Station serves as an Amtrak train station. Approximately 360 passengers board or de-train on an average day. Most of the grand terminal has been unused since the 1970's. The station is scheduled to receive a $75 million renovation during 2012-2013 to restore it to its former glory.

The Springfield Amtrak station serves a north-south train route between New York and points south and Brattleboro Vermont and an east -west route that connects Boston to Chicago. The station has 6 tracks, 3 (tracks 1, 2 and 2a) serving the Boston & Albany Main Line and another 3 (tracks 4, 6 and 8) serving the Amtrak Springfield Line. The Amtrak tracks are independent from the other tracks which are maintained by CSX as part of the Boston & Albany Line.

The railroad station and the retaining wall are part of the Downtown Springfield Railroad Historic District.
