Granite was first quarried from this area during the 1840's. Operations expanded when the Rockport Granite Company acquired the Babson Farm quarry. Because of its uniquely beautiful coastal seascape, 17 acres of the quarry at Halibut Point were purchased and given to the Trustees of Reservations, in 1929. During World War II a lookout/fire control tower was constructed to provide aiming information for the coastal defense guns that guarded Boston and Portsmouth Harbors.
Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation converted this structure into a visitors and administrative center. From the top of the lookout tower visitors can look down on the massive quarry hole with its steep surrounding cliffs. Looking north, over the Atlantic Ocean you can see as far as New Hampshire and Maine.
