Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Art is an Art Deco building at the Quadrangle in Springfield. Along the upper part of the facade are a series of bas relief sculptures. All are set in a hexagonal frame and represent some aspect of art or culture.
The Chinese dragon is set apart from the rest. It is the largest of the sculptures and occupies a place on the south facing facade of the building set above a window.
In Chinese culture the dragon is a benevolent creature. The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. They also symbolize power over water, rain, typhoons, and floods. The 5-clawed dragon was the symbol of the Emperor of China. In the Zhou Dynasty, the 5-clawed dragon was assigned to the Son of Heaven. During the Qin Dynasty, the dragon appeared on national flags.
