Marker Text:
Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie Fifty-Two Years of Training Excellence October 1940 - September 1992 This commemorative plaque is presented to the citizens of the City of Portage la Prairie and the surrounding area in appreciation for the outstanding support and friendship continuously extended to the military and civilian members of Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie throughout its history. The strength of the relationship between our communities and the spirit of co-operation that has always prevailed, have been key to the success of military flying training operations at CFB Portage, from its establishment in 1940 under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan to its closure in 1942. The spirit of flying training will live on at Portage after closure, through the continuing mandate of 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School and the Canadian Forces contracted flying training and support programme. Highlighted above is the heraldic crest of Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie. It portrays three voyageurs carrying a canoe and supplies on the long portage from the Assiniboine River across the plains to Lake Manitoba, hence, the symbolic link to the City of Portage la Prairie. Its founder Pierre de la Verendrye and our ancestors. The motto on the crest - Sic itur ad astra - means "Such is the path to the stars". The heraldic crest was given Royal Assent by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II in July 1969, and will forever represent the excellence of aircrew training conducted at CFB Portage la Prairie for more than half a century. Colonel R.R.Henault Base Commander and all members of CFB Portage la Prairie 24 April 1992
