This soldier and sailor pair are together holding a banner atop the memorial. The figures were carved in Italy out of white marble by Giuseppe Lagomarsini, and erected by Messrs James Beresford of Belper.

The memorial cost £700 an amount raised by voluntary public subscription. It was unveiled by Mr F. C Arkwright on 21st May 1921. The total height of the memorial is 23 feet 11.5 inches.
The figures are very finely carved and the council keeps it well maintained, having it professionally cleaned every two years. It is item number 2122 on the United Kingdom Inventory of National War Memorials.
After the war many miniature china models of memorials were made as souvenirs. The model of the Matlock Bath memorial was the second most popular design after the Cenotaph in London. When they were made they were often sold in other towns and had their own crest added to them. (
