This is the first "Ghost Bike" that was installed in Santa Fe. New Mexico. It was placed to honor Davis Sciera who died October 12, 1998 north of Airport Road on N.M. 599 not long after he and his finacee moved to Santa Fe from Colorado. He was an avid bicyclist. The driver who hit Sciera was charged a year later by a grand jury, with vehicular homicide. A judge later determined she had driven carelessly and ordered her to write a letter of apology to Sciera's family and to do 20 hours of community service.
New Mexico has been rated last of the 50 US State, for bicycle friendly policies by the League of American Bicyclists. In 2008 there were 366 traffic fatatlities in New Mexico. Seven were bicyclists.
