The Old Bakery Building, located at 1006 Congress Ave., Austin, TX, has a long 130+ year history. Starting as a bakery, it has gone though many phases from being a night club to being vacant and deteriorating to being restored by the Austin Heritage Society, to being used to celebrate the USA's bicentennial. One of many plaques mounted on the facade of this nobel surviving building is titled "The Old Bakery Bicentenial Square" and reads:
"The Old Bakery was the office of the Bicentennial Affairs during the celebration of the American bicentennial in Austin. Festival events, projects preserving Austin’s heritage, and its gift to the nation “a bold plan to preserve, restore, and enhance Austin’s waterways and the open spaces around them” were sponsored by Austin patriots of 1976.
Above is a replica of the marker recognizing groups and individuals for outstanding contributions to the American bicentennial celebration in Austin, Texas, by the Heritage ’76 Committee."
And, according to the Austin Parks and Recreation website, "The City of Austin Office of Bicentennial Affairs and the Texas Bicentennial Information Center occupied the building between July 1974 and September 1976. The Old Bakery and Emporium opened its doors in October, 1976, as a co-sponsored project of, the Senior Programs Section of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and the First Lady's Volunteer Program of the Texas Center for Volunteer Action."
There is an Austin Bicentennial Commendation medallion also on the building just above the bicentennial commemoration that was awarded by the Heritage '76 Committee.
