Torver Village Hall is the former school and these are the old toilets. Pupils used the two separate cubicles in front, the staff used the one behind. The staff toilet still has the hole in the board and midden below with light shining through from the cleaning hole. The pupils toilets have had the single holed boards removed so that the chairs can be stored in there. The stack of chairs are on slatted wo0oden frames which cover the hole. Light can be seen through the slats. Both the staff and pupils privies empty in to a midden between the two. There is a large windowless opening on the side where collected material could be scattered on the field.
This block has no water supply. The main building was renovated and brought up to modern standards for a village hall but still has the lovely wooden floor.
Former School WaymarkA local author has a book called "Cumbrian Privies" by John Dawson showing what has happened to many old fashioned privies in Cumbria.
