Fort Kaskaskia construction began in 1759 due to the fear of British invasion into what was French territory at the time. The Fort was never completely finished and played no role in the French and Indian War (1754-1763) when the Illinois country was transferred from France to Great Britian.

There is a Lewis and Clark connection to this site also.

All that remains are earth berms but the sign at the site has an artist conception of how it may have looked.
