"Gules, a Lion's head Argent issuant langued and crowned Or." (Flags of the World)

Augusta Raurica was a important Roman town from the 1st century AD. It had about 20 times the inhabitants of the current municipality. All over town you can find Roman remnants, temples, columns and the best preserved Roman theater north of the Alps.

So it is kind of surprising that Augst, other than neighboring Kaiseraugst, does not have a reference to the Roman heritage in the flag. The flag was originally the flag of the noble family Pfierter von Liestal; they were allowed to collect the toll for the bridge over the river Ergolz in Augst in the 14th century.

I found this flag at the street half the way up from the Ergolz bridge to the Roman theater.
