The Pawtucket Post Office was built in 1896-97. The building was designed by architect William Martin Arkin in a Beaux Arts style. The Beaux Arts style was popular for public buildings following the Chicago World Columbian Exposition in 1893. The building served as the post office until 1940s. The building then served as the Municipal Welfare Building until 1976. The building was joined with the adjacent Deborah Cook Sayles Public Library in 1982 and is now part of the Pawtucket Public Library.
