Long Description:Wilkinson Park, Park Place, contains a memorial dedicated in 1897 to the soldiers and sailors of the Civil War. The monument, executed by W. Granville Hastings, is named 'Liberty Arming the Patriot' and represents the figure of Liberty leaning on a spear and handing a sword to the patriot about to leave his plow. - Rhode Island: A Guide to the Smallest State, Pawtucket section, pg. 250.
The memorial is still located in in Wilkinson Park and appears to be in good condition. The memorial was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The memorial has a plaque on it reverse side inscribed:
In Grateful Recognition
Of The Valiant And Self-Sacrificing Service To Their Country
Of All Persons
Who Went From Pawtucket And It Vicinity To Join
The Forces Of The United States
During The Civil War.
And Especially To The Memory Of Those Who Suffered
And Died In That Service.
This Monument Is ErectedBy
The Ladies Soldiers Memorial Association
Of Pawtucket, Rhode Island
And By Then Is Consecrated As An Everlasting Memorial
