The National Wild and Scenic Rivers website (
visit link) has this to say about this segment of the delaware River:
"Designated Reach: November 10, 1978. The segment from the point where the river crosses the northern boundary of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to the point where the river crosses the southern boundary.
Classification/Mileage: Scenic — 35.0 miles; Total — 35.0 miles.
This segment of the Delaware flows through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and cuts an "S" curve through Kittatinny Ridge. This beautiful landscape provides great recreational opportunities in addition to sightseeing and geological study value."
Note that the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area begins at the point where the river forms the border of Pennsylvania and New York south along the border with New Jersey to the Delaware Water Gap.
The river here is relatively shallow...but has a strong current...and is used for many recreational purposes... including rafting, kayaking, tubing, fishing, etc. The Appalachian Trail also runs along parts of the River as well.
