The systemic beds at the Botanic Garden of Smith College trace the development of flowering plants. By walking through the garden you follow the evolution of dicots and monocots. The dicots in order of development, simple buttercups, to complex aster, mints, and snapdragons, are located to the north of the main path while the monocots such as lilies, irises, orchids, and grasses are to the south.

The grounds include thirty-four planted beds each with a different species of flower. Twenty-eight species of dicots and seven species of monocots are represented in the beds. There is also a water garden, pond, bog garden and a beautiful fountain. Trees are represented by a dwarf conifer garden, a ginkgo tree and, on the lawn east of the beds, their prize tree - a Dawn Redwood tree.

Modern systematic organization enables the better understanding of relationships among plants. This is crucial to preserve biodiversity and to be able to genetically engineer plants to improve resistance to plant diseases and pathogens.

Adjacent to and supporting the garden is the Lyman Plant House and Greenhouses.
