English and British history is speckled with rebellion and war in the name and interest of the perpetrators. It is doubtful that many of the men and women who died as a result had much of an understanding of the issues and to be honest, very often little to gain. A serf is a serf for all that.
The Percy Rebellion was one of those times when King Henry IV and his influential supporter Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland had fallen out in the aftermath of the Battle of Homildon Hill in 1402. At this time, when fighting together against the Scots, King Henry did not play the game.
At this time captured noblemen were worth a great deal in randsom money and Henry Percy had captured a fair few of them. He was due a pretty good payday. However, King Henry was suffering a fiscal crisis following a coup over his cousin Richard II (who Henry Percy had helped remove from the throne), wars in Wales as well as Scotland, and the continued support for Richard in several parts of the country.
King Henry demanded that Henry Percy handed over the valuable noblemen and paid him rather less than they were really worth. As a result, Henry Percy declared his support for another pretender to the throne, Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March.
This was the final battle of the rebellion, Henry Percy meeting his end here. There were not thousands of men here but there were certainly hundreds. It is thought that the sides were fairly evenly matched but the edge went to the side with the longbows, the side loyal to Henry IV, despite them having been a rather hasily assembled force. Henry Percy's men were routed and those that escaped are thought to have fled to Scotland.
The political influence of the Percy family faded and others eventually filled the vacuum left.
