Camelback Mountain is a well-known area landmark and the highest point in Phoenix, a special wild desert preserve in the city, and a favorite with hikers, rock climbers, nature lovers. CamelBack has red sandstone cliffs and steep trails, with 360 degree views of Phoenix/Scottsdale.
The trail to the 2,704-foot summit is relatively short, but involves a climb of about 1,200 feet in just over one mile.
It is easy to see how Camelback Mountain got its name, since it is easy to spot the head and hump of the mountain’s "camel kneeling down" The Mountain is in the Echo Canyon Recreation Area, and is managed by the City of Phoenix Parks Department. It is located
near the city of Scottsdale and there are several resorts nearby. Only a portion of the mountain was saved from development; just the top portion is public.
