This fountain was somewhat of a mystery to me. I've noticed them in Europe but not in the United States. The narrative for the Court Square Historic District finally confirmed my suspicion. It is a 19th century, continuously flowing, drinking fountain through which potable water comes out of a bronze lion's head.
The cylindrical fountain with a conical top is made of highly polished pink granite. A beautifully rendered bronze head of a lion sits halfway up the street side of the fountain. Water spouts from a tube in the lion's mouth. A basin below doubles as a water collector and a drinking bowl for animals.
