At the intersection of Springfield and Main Streets there is a open area containing monuments and a picnic table. Next to the picnic table a solar trash compactor has been installed.

According to the manufacturer, The BigBelly Solar, their system will "reduce collection frequency by up to 80%, freeing up resources, slashing fuel costs and increasing recycling opportunities". This is because compacted trash requires fewer pickups resulting in a more efficient use of labor, lower fuel and maintenance costs), and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Because this is a "green" solution. The concept is appealing and readily adopted by citizens. They make an extra effort to dispose of waste in these bins and thus reduce litter. The hope is that they will become standard receptacles for trash disposal.

This trash compactor was funded with the help of a grant from the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust.
Type of system: Photovoltaic (electrical)
