It was in the spring of 1852 when James H. Jones built his home, now known as the halfway house because of its location halfway between Stevens Point and Berlin in what eventually became the Village of Rural.

Between 1982 & 1989 Potts Avenue was changed to Rural Road. The location of house is on the corner of Rural Road and Ashmun Street. The actual location is in the Village of Rural but the Post Office is in the town of King.

"In the spring of 1852, James Jones with his able bodied boys began building a house where the wagon trail crossed the river going west. It consisted of two uprights joined by a long room and a partly enclosed porch. This was the first real house in rural, and was to be a substantial structure for family living and for accommodation of travelers. The east wing was used as a bar room and office. A stairway led from this room to the low upstairs rooms. In the west wing Jones kept a small store and in 1853 the post office was moved from Daytons to the new house. James Jones became the postmaster and his name for his holdings stuck-the post office was named "Rural, Wisconsin."
