Quick Description: Tall and imposing monument standing near the entrance to Veterans Park near downtown Natchez.
Location: Mississippi, United States
Date Posted: 9/24/2011 4:44:43 AM
Waymark Code: WMCN5K
The monument is topped by a six foot high stone sculpture of a confederate soldier The soldiers rifle barrel is pointing towards the ground and his head is looking down. Because the soldier stands atop a 25 foot tall stone base, it is very difficult to see the details of the sculpture with the naked eye. Also the base of the monument is surrounded by grey iron posts with a chain attached to each, making it difficult to get close. Additionally, trees arch over the memorial making photographs difficult to take.
Over all a fine example of the type of memorials that were being erected during the 1890's. Parking is available on the streets around the memorial.

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH:
Statue shows the wear a stone monument would naturally incur over the course of 120 years. Additionally the letter "Y" in the word "GRAY" on one of the side panel inscriptions is defaced. Otherwise sculpture appears to be in good condition.
Please give the date of your visit, your impressions of the sculpture, and at least ONE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH. Add any additional information you may have, particularly any personal observations about the condition of the sculpture.
