The Virginia-Carolina Railroad (aka the Virginia Creeper) was finally (after two bankruptcies) constructed in early 20th century to access the rich old growth timber in the region. The Green Cove station also was the local post office and general store supporting several hundred families. The railroad ceased operation in 1977 after heavy flooding severely damaged the track.

Since then, the route underwent a rails-to-trail conversion to the extremely popular Virginia Creeper Trail (VCT). The old Green Cove station is now a rest stop along the bike trail, managed by the US Forest Service, to offer snacks and drinks.
