After the original church had been moved, Richard Upjohn was chosen to design the new stone church. He is best known for designing the Trinity Church in New York City. The cornerstone was laid by Bishop DeLancey in 1850 and the building was completed in 1851.

On Ascension Day, May 10, 1888 the church was almost entirely destroyed by fire caused by a natural-gas explosion. The church was restored and services began again in 1890.
