This barber pole is fitted on the wall of a hairdresser's projecting from the building like a flag pole. The lack of a halyard and flag are testament to it being a what it looks like - a barber pole! The pole is about six feet in length with a diameter of about three inches. It is interesting to note that, here in the UK, all the barber poles I have come across are just two colours - red and white. Those in the USA seem to incorporate a blue stripe as well.
A quick look at Wikipedia also notes these colour differences. To quote:
"A barber's pole is a type of sign used by barbers to signify the place or shop where they perform their craft. The trade sign is, by a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, a staff or pole with a helix of colored stripes (usually red, white, and blue in the United States; often red and white in other countries)."
