This castle was built early in the 12th century by Roger de Montgomery. The history surrounded it is full of folklore. It became Fulk Fitz Warine's early on and after a falling out with King John in 1199, the castle was given over to Morys de Powys and Fulk became an outlaw.
It is believed that he was the original Robin Hood and lived in the nearby Babbinswood. Eventually the castle was returned to the Fitz Warine family (1203).
In its history it is believed to have once been home to the Holy Grail.
There is a regular geocache on the grounds of the castle with the permission of the trustees.
Currently the trustees are trying to raise funds for some much needed repairs and have recently opened a tea shop/souvenir shop within the castle.
Swans, ducks and other waterfowl are here year round and nest in the moat.
There is a voluntary 30p charge for parking at the castle.
