Perhaps the most surprizing structure in Court Square, Springfield, MA is this three-tiered lion fountain located at the east end of the square. This black iron fountain has water spouting from three levels. At the very top is a triton figure spouting water through a conch shell. The water falls into a small basin then gracefully cascades into a larger basin past some phoenix-like figures in the middle. The water then drains through the mouths of lion heads into the largest basin below. At that point four large lion figures spout horizontal streams of water to intersect the falling water. The overall effect is quite charming and is always a unexpected surprise to visitors to the area.
