The light house on the south beach, built in 1891, was mainly used to guide shipping traffic in and around the treacherous "Borkum Reef" a shoal that could shift from one storm to another. A more modern use of the lighthouse was the use as a radio tower repeater tower helping with offshore communication. The most recent addition is a marine high seas radar system. The total height of the lighthouse is 27m.
