The old lighthouse of Borkum was replaced with a modern lighthouse in 1879. This lighthouse dates back to the whaling times of the people from Borkum. Tales have it that the lighthouse had been misused by pirates to guide ships into their death,

The old lighthouse, with its adjacent cemetery, was used back in the old days, when the island of Borkum was heavily engaged into whaling.
In 1817 the old church bell tower was converted into a lighthouse, and was used like that for almost 80 years.
With a newer more modern and much taller lighthouse placed closer to the shore the old was retired in 1879. Vistors are welcome with prior appointment. The 150 stairs steps to the top are rewarded with a beautiful view on the viewing platform.
