The section of the river below Cow Gate Pool suffers droughts in the summer months caused in part by a sough dug by the lead miners to lower the water table in the area. This enabled the miners to work lower down on the strata and to remain dry....but the sough takes the water from above this weir ( a sink hole can be seen above the weir ) to below Psalm Pool at Lathkill Lodge below Over Haddon, about 2km east, where the river flows 'normally'.

The river gauges are automatically monitored every five minutes and together with rainfall and other information the impact of the sough will be assessed. The flow in the sough may possibly be restricted so that more water flows in the river proper.

When we were there in August 2011 there was no water flowing over the Cow Gate weir and the bridge at Lathkill Lodge was over a completely dry river bed. There were small pools of water at various points along the river between these two points and water was heard flowing in the sough at Bateman's house. There was water in the pool about 100m downstream, the second gauge picture is of this one.
RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION:
Depth marks indicated from 0cm to 100cm every 2cm. The lower part of the gauge, below about 26cm was obscured by calcium carbonate deposits.
