In the last years of the first decade of the 21st century, there was a wide world discussion about the establishment of a US missile defense system in Central Europe. Accordingly to the project, the radars would be installed in the Czech Republic, while the ten interceptor missiles were supposed to have its bases in Poland.
In the Czech Republic there was a strong reaction against the plan, and Russia made clear its disagreement. However, the economic crises made the US Government quit the plan.
The estimated cost of the whole thing was around $3.5 billion. But then, there were always doubts among experts as to if the whole system is functional or not, making the arms deal a hard sell to the lawmakers who had to approve the funds.
The initial timeline would had been concluded in 2012, when the whole system was expected to be operative.
