On Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the second week in September the Greek-American community comes together to hold an annual celebration of their culture. Glendi, in Greek, means celebration.
For thirty-three years people of all backgrounds are drawn to the Greek Cultural Center at Memorial Square, Main and Plainfield Streets, to listen to the music, do some Greek dancing, watch the performance of the costumed dancers, view the art exhibits, shop for handmade Greek crafts, and of course enjoy the wide variety of traditional Greek Food and pastries. Visitors can have a full dinner in the indoor cafeteria, sip a Greek coffee with pastry at the cafe, or grab a quick meal at the outdoor tents. A guided tour of the magnificent cathedral, designed by Richard Upjohn, is offered several times daily during the course of the festival.
Admission to the festival is $1.00, for which you will receive a raffle ticket making you eligible for ten cash and merchandise prizes.
The Memorial Square district is listed on National Register of Historic Places.
