Gilbert acquired the steel beam and turned it into a memorial at its City Hall. Surrounding the beam are 4 walls with the names of the victims of that event, distinguished by flight, Pentagon and World Trade Center. Stone benches allow one to sit and read the names on the walls. The steel beam has warping in it from the destruction of that day.
Although thousands of miles away from Ground Zero, some survivors of that terrible day now live in Gilbert. It is a city sponsored memorial, funded privately.
