St Katherine's Dock used to be used for ships plying their trade worldwide. Today it is used as a marina. In olden days as well as today, the only way for a vessel to enter the dock is through a lock connecting the dock to the River Thames. The lock has gates at each end and each gate has a two tide gauges. The purpose of the gauges is so that the lock master can see that the levels are identical on each side of the gate before opening the gate.
