In 1844 the Pittsburgh and Boston Copper Harbor Mining Company had first worked the green rock on the surface at the edge of this point of land. After that they sank a shaft at this location, the first one ever in Michigan. Reaching a final depth of 60 feet, they ended up sinking more money in shaft than they got out of it in copper. Plagued with problems with water in the shaft they moved their operation across the harbor to near Fort Wilkins where their luck proved no better. In the end, further down the peninsula they discovered the fabulously wealthy Cliff mine, which far more than repaid them for these earlier failed efforts.
