When copper was discovered on the Keweenaw Peninsula in 1844 it set off a rush as never seen before in America. The only access was by water and many a ship met its fate in the fierce waters of Lake Superior, and even if they made to Copper Harbor, they were not safe. This anchor is from one of those unknown ships that met its fate in those days.
